Char Klein (they/them, b.1994) is a French/American artist working within the mediums of photography, non-fiction writing, and bookmaking. They studied at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and at Columbia College Chicago where they received their degree in Fine Art Photography in 2017. Char has spent the majority of the past decade working as an educator in remote wilderness landscapes for the National Outdoor Leadership School. Their most recent work engages with the somatics of trans bodies in connection with land and earth elements. Their photography practice is an exercise in re-imagining the gendered body within the context of art history.
This year, they debuted their first solo show ‘Trans, L’Origine du Monde’ at Rhyme and Reason Museum in Santa Fe. Char has photographed for or been featured in publications such as Outside Magazine, the Albuquerque Journal, Paste Magazine, Boston Art Review and Boom Saloon. Their work has most recently been shown in group shows at Noise for Now in Hudson, NY and Here/Now by Vantage Points in NYC. Char works under the mentorship of artist and photographer, David Benjamin Sherry. They currently live and work in Santa Fe.
